"The southern take on Sugi: unadorned, untouched by perfumed intrusion."

Behind The Creation

Japanese Cedar Watermill Incense

Baba Suishaba, established in 1918, is one of Yame’s watermills that once ground cedar dust for incense makers across Japan. With only one incense to its name, the house seeks to preserve the scent of Sugi, which, according to its owner Takeshi Baba, is a familiar fragrance that brings comfort. In Baba’s words, the spirit of each burning stick carries “the sound of the waterwheel rotating, and the pounder moving up and down”—a vivid echo that makes it truly special.
