The inaugural incense curation of Atmosphere was first presented in 2022 to an intimate local community, shaped by the subjective artistic judgment of its founding members. Since then, our curatorial philosophy has progressed alongside our evolving insight into the craft of incense making and an increasingly nuanced grasp of the audiences we engage. What follows represents the latest articulation of our framework guiding our current curations.
Principle 1: On the Primacy of Craft
Craftsmanship as the foundational condition of the work.
The vast history of incense offers an abundant inventory of contemporary options. While conventional curatorial approaches often prioritize measurable metrics—the most sold, the oldest, or the largest—as a preliminary filter for excellence, Atmosphere adopts a different evaluative framework. We seek to navigate past the weight of heritage and the noise of market popularity. Each creation is evaluated on its own terms, with craftsmanship (or what we call le savoir-faire) placed above all else. This extends from the olfactory architecture of the blend, to the sourcing of ingredients, and the rigor of production.
Principle 2: On Contemporary Resonance
Relevancy within contemporary living as a prerequisite.
In the view of our founders, a tradition is not a relic to be preserved but a practice whose significance depends on its relevance to the contemporary world. Though the archives of aromatic creations are rich with past masterpieces, many have lost resonance in the present due to shifting aesthetics, material scarcity, or scientific advances that challenge legacy formulas. Within the context of Atmosphere Curation, we prioritise works with a potential to integrate seamlessly into the universal habits of today. Our evaluation extends from olfactory appeal and functional utility to habitual practicality and sustainability within the current landscape.
Principle 3: On the Scientific Basis of Art
A required equilibrium of artistic expression and respect for science.
Our curation showcases works that share the same philosophy as our own: that every fragrance creation is an interdisciplinary practice of both art and science. At its most foundational level, this entails looking past commercially constructed myths to recognize that every “natural” ingredient is, in a laboratory context, a complex “chemical” composition; and thus, plant-derived and synthetic aromatic molecules hold equal significance within a discerning palette.
Atmosphere Curation excludes reductive practices that neglect the importance of formulation and dosage. Applied to current trends, we do not engage works derived from arbitrary alteration, most notably 'hand-dipped' incense where pre-fabricated unscented sticks are superficially saturated in aromatic mixtures without consideration of chemical interactions and olfactory balance. Such approaches are not only scientifically unsound, but also diminish the artistic integrity of the craft.
Principle 4: On Distinctive Artistic Voice
A continuous pursuit of authentic creative expression.
Atmosphere Curation is guided by works that articulate a discernible artistic vision and demonstrate an unmistakably authentic identity that is fundamentally irreplaceable. This is expressed either in a singular, exceptional creation that stands as an iconic phenomenon, or in a sustained artistic trajectory evidenced enduringly across a creator’s body of work. This necessitates our discretionary approach to selection, which does not seek to represent an entire catalog, but rather to isolate those specific works that constitute the most distinguished expressions.
Principle 5: The Givens
Our foundational precepts predating technical considerations.
Duty of Care: A non-negotiable exclusion of animal testing and animal-derived raw materials, with formulations that respect the physiological safety of all domestic inhabitants.
Ecological Viability: A continuing pursuit of ecologically considered alternatives, initiated from the inception of our practice and sustained as an ongoing, indefinite endeavor.
Discerning Discourse: A conscious distinction from pseudoscientific claims and sensationalist narratives. Our framework maintains a clear separation from speculative marketing artifice, greenwashing, fear-based appeals, and transactional advocacy, including influencer endorsements and celebrity-driven hype.
